Replacement Handles For Windows

Double-glazed windows are a very popular feature. As time passes, they may become rusty or worn down.
To replace a UPVC window handle, you have to know the length of the spindle of the handle you are replacing and also its fixings. The best way to determine this is to examine the base of your old handle.
Handle
Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can be damaged through wear and tear, or even intentional damage. This could result in the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or that it's not locked in any way. If this happens, it could be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always the case. In most cases, a new handle or lock is all that's needed.
The most popular type of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette. The handle has a spindle that extends from the handle and slot into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It's important to match the correct handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they function properly, which is why we have a wide range of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.
It is a good idea, when replacing the uPVC handle, to use screw covers to protect the screws from corrosion and keep them secure. Alternatively, it's possible to make use of a spacer or washer to create a more secure seal. Having a screw cap in place will also prevent water and debris from entering the handle and damaging the handle.
After you have removed the handle from the window, it's recommended to clean the spindle and the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions properly and will also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.
It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. You should carefully read the instructions that came with your new handle and review the previous one to get a better understanding of how to do it. The process is usually simple. If you encounter any issues that aren't addressed in this guide, we suggest contacting our team to get more details.
It's also worth noting that if you're replacing the uPVC cockspur handle (also known as an Espag handle) you must examine the step height of the window to determine the appropriate size of handle. The step height is the distance from the base or frame of the window up to where the cockspur's nose handle sits when installed.
Hinges
If your windows begin to close and open with a visible gap this can be caused by the hinges not being in line with the frame. This is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a new set of replacement hinges for windows. We have a variety of different options and even customize the dimensions of the hinges to meet your needs.
We offer a variety of hinges suitable for upvc and timber windows. These are available in a variety of colors that match your existing window frames and come with all fixings for fitting. If you have a double-glazed window with an older style of hinge, we can also supply a range of repair screws that allow you to re-cut the old thread form back into the frame.
We offer a range of hinge styles including traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle up to fire escape egress hinges for use on larger side-hung windows. These are designed to open fully in the event of a crisis and have an easy-clean position that makes it easy to clean. We also stock restricted-egress hinges designed to limit the opening angle of windows to 100mm maximum. This is ideal for families with children.
A squeaky hinge could be a sign that the hinges must be replaced. This is usually caused by metal rubbing against metal. If the noise persists then a small amount of lubricant can aid.
Window plumbs help avoid unnecessary binding, this means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, which ensures that it opens and closes correctly. A window that isn't plumb could begin to open and close with difficulty or may become warped over time causing problems for the seal and appearance of the window.
You can buy replacement hinges for windows made of upvc in imperial or metric sizes. The metric sizes tend to be slightly more precise, but this isn't really noticeable when they are put in. The first corner holes on the track are standard however, the rest of the holes may vary depending on the hardware used originally. We suggest that you take measurements of the hole spacings on your frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc in order to ensure they are the right dimensions.
Crank
The normal wear and tear that happens over time can result in damage to the window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This can make it more difficult to open and close your windows. It can also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or shut, or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle it could be a sign you need to replace the mechanism. If you are unable to lock your window or the multipoint locks are broken, then it might be worth replacing the crank mechanism also.
It's simple to replace the window crank with minimum effort. However, it is essential that you purchase the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same height as the old one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch that runs along the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the spindle length on your current handle to determine the size of the replacement.
The type of window handle you own will determine what kind of crank mechanism is required for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles have a mental spindle at the back which is attached to the frame of the window and drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles have pegs which are fixed into the frame by three or four screws which are set into the sash and frame.
Once you've found the appropriate replacement, it's easy to fit. Remove any screws for mounting trims from the casement cover and gently lift the cover off to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever with the previous one, and then remove any trim screws that are rusted. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that are damaged or bent. Then, put upvc door handle on top of the mechanism.
